Of Men and Mountains

I recently stumbled onto this little sketch in my "projects" folder. Usually, this is the place where my ideas and doodles get saved, sit, and eventually die. But sometimes the contents of this directory still inspire me....even many months later. So, I decided to revive it.

I vaguely remember my initial motivation, but I believe it began with asking myself: "What game do I want to make? ...or, what game would I want to play?"

So, I decided to stage this scene is as if it was from the POV of a third-person, in-game camera. I imagine this encounter really only as a precursor to a larger fight. A gate keeper. Sequences of blocks and attacks would eventually drive the beast back far enough for the player to take a divergent path and continue on their quest.

Hopefully this is the beginning of many more revivals. I'm looking at you 2011!

With summer gone and temperatures dropping it feels like a perfect time to bring out the oils. I spent two recent Sunday afternoons on this. Done en plein air at Bull Creek, a nice little spot just down the hill from my apt.

Most of my sketchbook work these days is the product of me in coffee shop/book store with my trusty Staedtler brush pen. Airports are good too. People tend to sit relatively still on layovers.

A little while ago I was watching Hulu and the Airforce had a commercial that showed a cockpit-eyes view of a Thunderbird in flight. I thought it was pretty cool, so I decided it might be a nice challenge to do a piece from a similar POV.

Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure!

So the game I worked tirelessly on for the past year or so is now out on shelves. Available for the Nintendo DS, "Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure" tells the story of a British explorer on an expedition to find the lost pieces of a legendary golden suit. Hatsworth must find these pieces and harness their power in order to close the rift between the real world and the Puzzle Realm. For more info I suggest going to the website or reading some of the game's reviews.

Into The Pixel 2008

Here's a concept piece I did for the, still unannounced, DS game I've been working on. It was recently chosen as one of sixteen works in an exhibition that celebrates the world of video game art. The "Into The Pixel" show will display at E3, the E for All Expo, and I believe some international venues. As the game is announced and released, I'll have some more awesomeness to share. :)
